Probate Records

All records which relate to the disposition of an estate after its owner's death are referred to as probate records. These are many and varied in both content and value but, basically, they fall into two main classes . . . If a person died leaving a valid will we say he died testate, if not he died intestate. In most localities in America these records comprise, as a group, one of the most useful genealogical resources available.

Notes:

1. The New Orleans Public Library online index (Louisiana. Second District Court (Orleans Parish) General Index of All Successions, 1846 – 1880) was used to discover the docket number, 37522, for the succession of Anton Buhler. The FHL catalog was then searched and the corresponding film number 581292 was ordered.  This film ends with Docket No. 37511. The NOPL staff checked their copy of the microfilm and found that film number 591292 ends with docket 37511 not 37571. The NOPL staff found Docket number 37522 for Anton Buhler on the next film, number 581293 and were able to provide copies.. There is an error in the FHL catalog.

2. Anton Buhler succession file, Second District Court, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Docket Number 37522, pages 1-21. Filmed by The Genealogical Society of Utah, Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, Film No.: 581293. [Image scanned 12 October 2008 by George L. Buhler Jr., 16034 Glenbrook Knoll Lane, Houston, Texas, 77095, from a microfilm copy in possession of same obtained from the New Orleans Public Library, Louisiana Division.]

3. Anton Buhler succession file "Louisiana, Orleans, Second District Court Case Files, 1846-1880," Downloaded 23 Aug 2015 from FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRLT-JYM?cc=1879925&wc=SNGJ-T3D%3A176070101%2C178851901 : 20 May 2014); citing District Court. New Orleans City Archives, Louisiana. Since the author obtained microfilm copies from note 1 in 2008, FamilySearch filmed the original documents in 2014 and made them available. These copies (jpeg format) are much better quality. The jpeg images with italic refernece numbers have no corresponding document in pdf.
